How to request access or claim a Google Business Profile (GBP)
If you’ve bought a business and the previous owner didn’t give you access to the Google Business Profile, follow these steps to reclaim it.
Step 1: Search for the business on Google
Search for your business name on Google or Google Maps.
If the listing appears, click ‘Own this business?’.
If you don’t see this option, skip to Step 5.
Step 2: Request access
Click ‘Own this business?’ and sign in with the Google account you want to manage the profile from.
Complete the requested business details and submit the access request.
Google will email the current owner and give them up to 7 days to respond.
Step 3: Wait 7 days for a response
You’ll receive confirmation that the request was sent.
The current owner can approve or deny access.
If there’s no response after a few days, Google will allow you to proceed with verification.
Step 4: Verify ownership
If no one responds, Google will prompt you to verify your connection to the business.
This may involve a postcard, phone, email, or video verification.
Once approved, you’ll become the new profile owner.
Step 5: Contact Google Support directly
If no claim option appears, visit Google Business Profile Help and choose:
Access my Business Profile → Request ownership of a profile.
Submit your business details and confirm you’re the new legal owner. Supporting documents may be required.
