Be aware of the cowboys!

I started my IT career 28 years ago as a systems developer. That background wired my brain to think analytically, with an almost obsessive attention to detail.
Recently, I was brought in to fix a system built by a “cowboy”.
What I found was concerning:
- The original design relied on a static approach to cross-check a highly dynamic environment.
- From a technical standpoint, that’s fundamentally flawed.
- As I dug deeper, more and more loopholes began to surface.
- The scary part? The system appeared to be working… until you actually looked closely.
In the end, I rebuilt it from the ground up using a fully dynamic model.
The result? It immediately exposed a wide range of issues that had been completely missed before.
This is the reality we’re dealing with:
- Not all systems are built properly.
- Not all risks are visible on the surface.
Unfortunately, there are still “cowboys” amongst us that truly believe they are doing a good job — but are not.
